How to make the perfect 7 Minute Egg?

I’m not the biggest fan of fully-cooked egg yolks, unless I’m having scrambled eggs! If you’re like me, you would agree the perfect boiled egg has a slightly firm egg white while the yolk remains soft and runny.

I once had a server ask me, “Sandy, how do you cook a 7 Minute Egg?” Apparently a customer had just inquired about cooking a perfect soft boiled egg. My response was, “you boil the egg for 7 minutes; hence the name 7 Minute Egg.” She was embarrassed at the obviousness of my answer to her question and stormed off. But the truth is that many people struggle with egg consistency and timing, so here’s some advice.

The secret to the perfect boiled egg is temperature.

Let me explain. The eggs need to be cold and the water must be boiling. Keep the eggs in the fridge until the water is ready. Once the water comes to a boil, then you take out the eggs and place them in the water for exactly 7 minutes. After 7 minutes, remove the eggs and dunk them in a bowl of ice water (or just very cold water). It is important to do this as soon as you pull them from the boiling water in order to stop the cooking process. Do not forget this step or your eggs will be overcooked.

Ingredients

  • Refrigerated large size eggs 

Directions

  1. Boil a pot of water.
  2. Place eggs into boiling water.
  3. Let the eggs boil for exactly 7 minutes (Please use a timer).
  4. Remove eggs and place them in a bowl of ice water immediately to stop the cooking process.
  5. Peel the eggs and season with salt and pepper.

  1. Strangely, it’s hard to get the timing right for us non-cooks, I did what I thought would be a nice soft egg for six minutes and it had firmish yolk areas…obviously my timing was off! Thanks for laying out the recipes (yep I have cooking for Dummies book!) and I like how you have setup the checklist for the ingredients needed!

    • Temperature does play a role in cooking time. Room temperature vs. refrigerate temperature will result in very different doneness. I’m glad to hear that I am able to make this recipe as easy and convenient as possible. Thank you!
